Rezūm Water Vaporisation

What is Rezūm?

Rezūm is a minimally invasive treatment for benign (non-cancerous) enlargement of the prostate. It uses energy stored in water vapour (steam) to destroy excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow. Over the following weeks and months, the treated tissue is absorbed by the body, relieving obstruction and improving urinary symptoms.

Who may benefit?

Rezūm may be suitable for men with:

• Bothersome urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate

• A desire to avoid long-term medication

• Small to moderately enlarged prostates

• A preference for a minimally invasive treatment with preservation of sexual function

What happens during surgery?

The procedure is usually performed as a day procedure under a light general anaesthetic. A small instrument is passed through the urethra, and several short injections of sterile water vapour are delivered into the prostate tissue. No incisions are required.

Recovery

A urinary catheter is usually required for up to 7 days after the procedure while the prostate heals and the inflammation subsides. Urinary symptoms often worsen temporarily before improving, with most men noticing improvement within 2–6 weeks and continued improvement over approximately 3 months.

• If symptoms continue despite Rezūm, further treatments with either repeat Rezūm or an alternative procedure can be performed safely.

Risks

• Temporary burning or discomfort when passing urine

• Increased urinary frequency or urgency

• Blood in the urine or semen

• Urinary tract infection

• Temporary urinary retention requiring a catheter

• Occasionally the need for further treatments if symptoms persist or recur.

Is Rezūm right for everyone?

While Rezūm is an excellent option for selected men, it is not suitable for all prostates. For larger prostates or men seeking the most durable long-term relief, procedures such as HoLEP may provide more complete treatment with a lower likelihood of requiring future surgery.

Some men may also have evidence of back-pressure on their kidneys caused by an enlarged prostate. This requires a more definitive treatment option such as HoLEP.

The most appropriate treatment depends on prostate size, symptoms, overall health and personal preferences.
