Robotic Prostatectomy
What is robotic prostatectomy?
Robotic radical prostatectomy is a minimally invasive operation to remove the prostate gland for the treatment of prostate cancer that has not spread outside of the prostate. The surgery is performed using the latest robotic technology through several small incisions.
Who may benefit?
This operation is suitable for men with prostate cancer that is confined to the prostate or selected cases where surgery offers the best chance of cure.
What happens during surgery?
The prostate gland and seminal vesicles are removed using robotic instruments controlled by your surgeon. Depending on the type of cancer, nearby lymph nodes may also be removed in select cases. Where appropriate, nerve-sparing techniques may be used to maximise recovery of erectile function.
Recovery
Most patients stay in hospital for 1-2 nights. A urinary catheter remains in place for approximately one week. Walking is encouraged immediately after surgery, with return to most normal activities within 6 weeks. Follow-up after surgery is personalised depending on the type of cancer.

Radiation can still be performed in many cases after surgery to treat any remaining cancer cells if necessary. Surgery can often not be performed after radiation
Risks
Urinary leakage (usually improves over time)
Erectile dysfunction – Can be temporary or permanent depending on the type of cancer, ability to perform a nerve-spare, other medical issues, erectile function prior to surgery
Bleeding or infection
Injury to nearby structures including bowel/rectum/bladder
Need for further treatment if cancer recurs or is not completely removed
