Laserlithotripsy
What is laserlithotripsy?
Minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat stones in the ureter or kidney using a tiny telescope (ureteroscope or pyeloscope) passed through the natural urinary passages. No incisions are required with no cuts on the skin necessary.

What happens during surgery?
A fine telescope is passed through the urethra, bladder and ureter to reach the stone. A laser breaks the stone into tiny fragments that can either be removed with a basket or passed naturally. A temporary ureteric stent is commonly inserted to help the urine drain after the procedure and allow inflammation to subside.
Recovery
Most patients go home the same day or possibly the following day.
Mild discomfort in the bladder and flank region (in the back where the kidney is positioned), urinary frequency and blood in the urine are common while the stent remains in place.
Some patients get very bothersome ‘stent pain’ whereas some patients only get very mild discomfort from a ureteric stent. It is unpredictable who may get stent pain, however it is almost always manageable with simple pain killers, anti-inflammatories and ensuring adequate hydration.
